Blue Note ringtones
Rap and hip-hop currently dominate the ringtone landscape, though other genres like pop and rock are also making noise. But jazz? Now testing the waters is Blue Note, which just announced a slate of ringtones from legends Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Art Blakey and Chet Baker. The move represents the first time that the catalog has been positioned for mobile consumption. “Jazz buffs are in for a real treat as this is just the first of many ringtones we plan to make available,” said Jeff Zakim, director of New Media at Blue Note.
The concept may sound a bit far-fetched, though virtually everyone has a mobile device, including jazz aficionados. Ringtones represent the ultimate signifier of taste and identity, and a jazz ringtone immediately differentiates its owner from the pack. “Jazz fans of any age can be part of the mobile music phenomenon now,” said Bruce Lundvall, president of the newly-formed Blue Note Label Group. The group, which is an umbrella for labels Angel, Blue Note, EMI Classics, Manhattan, and Narada, was announced last week. Blue Note Label Group is a division of EMI.
